This team had special numbers before: the typeface Stencil was used for some years. Although this typeface is originally designed for spraying texts on boxes used for transportation, it didn't look really bad on football shirts. The 2003 numbers are taken from the typeface Bauhaus. Because the figures in this typeface are too wide to be used as shirt numbers (see: measures and Roda JC), they are horizontally squeezed to about 75 percent. Because this is a monoline design, it is obvious that the horizontal strokes in the squeezed version are thicker than the vertical strokes. In my opinion the royal white shirts are spoiled by these maltreated numbers. In 2005 Real Madrid replaced Bauhaus by Peignot (see Real Madrid 2005). | | | |
